Most thrift shoppers visit whenever it's convenient. The ones who consistently find the best things visit strategically — on the right days, at the right times, with a sense of how each store's inventory cycle works.
When stores restock
Most large thrift stores process donations continuously and put new stock out daily. The heaviest restocking typically happens Monday through Wednesday — donations from the weekend get sorted and priced over the weekend, then hit the floor early in the week.
Tip: Ask a staff member when they typically put out new stock. Most are happy to tell you, and the answer varies by store. Some restock in the morning, others in the afternoon.
The best window
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are the sweet spot for most stores. New stock from the weekend is out, but the weekend crowd hasn't arrived yet. If you can visit mid-morning on a weekday, you'll consistently see fresher inventory than weekend shoppers.
Sale days
Many Goodwill locations run color-tag sales — a specific color of tag is 50% off each week. These rotate, so a color that's on sale this week won't be on sale for several more weeks. Knowing the schedule lets you time visits to coincide with categories you're interested in.
- Check your local Goodwill's website or call to ask about the color-tag rotation
- Salvation Army often runs senior discounts on specific days — worth knowing even if you're not a senior, as stores tend to be less crowded
- Independent thrift stores often have their own sale schedules — ask at the register
- End-of-month is often when stores clear old stock to make room for new donations
