Vintage Levi's are one of the most consistently searched items on eBay, Depop, and Grailed. The demand is real, the supply is steady at thrift stores, and the margins — when you know what to look for — are genuinely good. A pair bought for $8 can sell for $60–120 depending on the cut, era, and condition.
How to date a pair of Levi's
The single tab on the back pocket is your first clue. A red tab with "LEVI'S" in all caps (both sides) indicates pre-1971 manufacture — these are the most valuable. A red tab with "LeVI'S" (lowercase e) is post-1971 but still vintage. A blank orange tab means 1980s or later.
- Check the care label — no care label means pre-1971 (US law required them from 1971)
- A single stitch on the back seam indicates pre-1980s manufacture
- The "Big E" (capital E on the red tab) is pre-1971 and commands a premium
- Hidden rivets on the back pockets indicate pre-1937 — extremely rare and valuable
- The paper patch on the waistband: leather-look paper is 1970s–80s; actual leather is earlier
Which cuts sell best
501s are the most recognizable and consistently sell well. 505s and 517s have strong followings among vintage buyers. The 550 and 560 (relaxed fits) are less sought after but still move. Anything labeled "Made in USA" adds value regardless of cut.
Tip: Measure the actual waist and inseam before listing — vintage sizing runs small and buyers know this. A pair labeled 32x32 might measure 30x30. Accurate measurements dramatically reduce returns.
Condition grading
Condition is everything in vintage denim. Light fading and wear is expected and often desirable — it's evidence of age. What kills value is: holes in the seat or thighs, broken belt loops, missing or damaged buttons, and heavy staining that won't wash out.
What to skip
- Stretch denim — even vintage stretch doesn't command the same prices
- Anything with significant seat wear or inner thigh holes
- Levi's made in Mexico or overseas after the US factories closed (mid-2000s)
- Sizes outside 28–36 waist — the market is thinner at the extremes
Start by buying a few pairs to learn the market before scaling up. Search completed eBay listings (not active ones) to see what actually sold and at what price. That data is more useful than any guide.
